How to flip an image

  1. 1

    Add your photo

Drop a file on the tool, choose one from your device or paste it from the clipboard.

  2. 2

    Flip it

Mirror it left to right, turn it upside down, or do both. Quarter turns are there too.

  3. 3

    Download the result

Save the flipped picture. It keeps its size, and its format unless you pick another.

Flip horizontally or vertically: what changes

A flip swaps two sides of a picture and leaves everything else alone: the size, the colours and every pixel stay what they were.

FlipWhat it doesHow to tell
Flip horizontallyLeft and right swap, like in a mirrorText reads backwards
Flip verticallyTop and bottom swap, like a reflection in waterThe picture stands on its head
BothThe same as a half turn (180°)Nothing is mirrored

Flipping is not rotating

A rotation turns the picture around its middle, the way you turn a sheet of paper. A flip turns it over, the way you turn a page. No rotation makes a mirrored picture, and no flip turns a portrait into a landscape. That is why the tool has both: the two large buttons flip, the two small ones turn by a quarter.

Why a selfie looks mirrored, or wrong

The front camera of a phone shows you a mirror image while you take the picture. Some phones save it that way; others turn it round to how other people see you, which is why a selfie can look unfamiliar afterwards. One horizontal flip switches between the two: the face you know from the mirror, and the one everyone else knows.

What to check after a flip

Anything that has a side gives a mirrored picture away: writing on a sign or a T-shirt, a logo, a watch on the wrong wrist, a parting on the other side, a car with the steering wheel on the passenger side. If the picture has none of these, nobody can tell. A flip is also the quick way to make a face look into the page instead of out of it.

Does flipping reduce quality?

The flip itself loses nothing: the same pixels in another order. A PNG is saved without loss. A JPG or a WebP has to be compressed again, which the tool does at high quality to keep the difference out of sight. Data stored inside the file, such as the place and the camera, is not carried over. Only a very large picture changes size: one longer than 4096 px on a side is scaled down to that, and the tool tells you so.

Questions about flipping images

How do I flip an image?

Add the picture, press Horizontally to mirror it or Vertically to turn it upside down, and download the result. It works in your browser, with nothing to install.

What is the difference between flipping and rotating?

Rotating turns a picture around its middle. Flipping mirrors it. A horizontal flip followed by a vertical one equals a half turn, but no rotation alone gives a mirror image.

How do I mirror or un-mirror a selfie?

Flip it horizontally. Whether a phone saves the mirror image you saw on the screen or turns it round depends on the phone and its settings; one horizontal flip switches between the two.

Does flipping change the size or the quality?

No. The picture keeps its width and height, and its format unless you choose another. A PNG is saved without loss; a JPG or a WebP is compressed again at high quality. Only pictures longer than 4096 px on a side are scaled down to that.

Can I flip a PNG with a transparent background?

Yes. Transparency is kept in PNG and WebP. If you save as JPG, which has no transparency, the see-through parts turn white.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The picture is flipped by your browser, on your device. It is not sent to PicSuit or to anyone else.
