WhatsApp profile picture size

WhatsApp publishes sizes only for WhatsApp Business: a square of at least 192 × 192 px, in JPG or PNG, of up to 5 MB, kept at 640 × 640 px. A file of 640 × 640 px works just as well for a personal account.

Why 640 px

WhatsApp scales larger pictures down to 640 × 640 px, so a bigger file does not look any sharper. What makes a profile photo look soft is a small or already compressed file, such as a screenshot. Start from a sharp photo and let the tool save exactly 640 px.

The whole square shows when someone opens it

In the list of chats your photo is a small circle. When someone taps it, WhatsApp shows the whole square, corners included. Make sure the corners look tidy too, not only the circle.

Who can see your WhatsApp profile photo

In the privacy settings of WhatsApp you choose who sees your profile photo: everyone, your contacts, your contacts except some, or nobody. Check the setting before you put up a work photo.

When the photo itself is the problem

A resizer cannot fix a photo that is too small, too dark or cut off at the forehead. If you have no better picture, a professional headshot made from a few selfies gives you one that fits the circle from the start.

Questions about WhatsApp profile pictures

What size is a WhatsApp profile picture?

WhatsApp keeps profile photos at 640 × 640 px and shows them as a circle in your chats. For WhatsApp Business it asks for at least 192 × 192 px, up to 5 MB, in JPG or PNG.

Why is my WhatsApp profile picture blurry?

Usually because the file was small or already compressed, for example a screenshot. A larger file does not help, since WhatsApp scales it down to 640 px. Start from a sharp photo and save 640 × 640 px.

Does WhatsApp crop my picture into a circle?

In the list of chats, yes. When someone opens your photo they see the whole square, so the tool keeps the square as your file.

Who can see my WhatsApp profile photo?

Whoever you allow in the privacy settings of WhatsApp: everyone, your contacts, your contacts except some, or nobody.

Should I upload a JPG or a PNG?

A JPG for a photo: it is the smaller file. PNG is under More options, for logos and pictures with flat colours or text.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The photo is cropped by your browser, on your device. It is not sent to PicSuit or to anyone else.
