Which format to choose
The format decides where a photo can be used and how large the file is. JPG is the safe choice for photos, PNG for pictures that must stay exact or see-through, WebP for websites.
| Format | Best for |
|---|---|
| JPG | Photos for email, forms and social media: accepted everywhere |
| PNG | Screenshots, logos and pictures with transparency; large files for photos |
| WebP | Photos and graphics on websites: small files, transparency allowed |
| HEIC | iPhone photos: small files, but many programs and sites cannot open them |
Files the tool opens
JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC or HEIF from an iPhone in every browser. AVIF and GIF open where the browser supports them; of a GIF, the first frame is converted.
Camera data stays behind
The new files are written from the picture alone, so they carry no camera data: no camera model, no date and no location. That is safer when you post a photo online. If you need that data, keep the original as well.
When the photo itself is the problem
Converting changes the file, not the photo: it cannot fix a blurry, dark or badly framed picture. If the photo is for a CV, a profile or an application and you have no good one, a professional headshot made from a few selfies gives you one.
