How to crop an image to 4:5

  1. 1

    Add your photo

Drop a file on the tool, choose one from your device or paste it from the clipboard.

  2. 2

    Place it in the frame

Drag and zoom until the 4:5 frame holds the part of the photo you want to keep.

  3. 3

    Pick a size and download

Choose 1080 × 1350 px for Instagram and Facebook, 2400 × 3000 px for an 8 × 10 in print, or every pixel of the crop.

What the 4:5 aspect ratio means

A 4:5 picture is a little taller than it is wide: 4 parts wide for every 5 parts tall, for example 1080 × 1350 px. It is the same shape as an 8 × 10 in print.

Why 4:5 is used for Instagram

In the feed a 4:5 post takes up more of the screen than a square or a wide photo, so it draws more attention. Instagram and Facebook both show 4:5 pictures in the feed in full.

What the Instagram grid cuts off

In the grid of your profile Instagram shows posts as 3:4 tiles, a little narrower than 4:5. A thin strip at the left and right is hidden there, so keep text and faces away from the side edges.

Cropping is not resizing

Cropping cuts off the edges that do not fit the new shape; nothing is squeezed or stretched. Resizing only changes the number of pixels. This tool does both in one go: it cuts the photo to the ratio, then saves it at the size you pick, or with every pixel of the crop under “Original”.

When the photo itself is the problem

A crop cannot fix a photo that is too small, too dark or cut off at the forehead. If you need a portrait and have no good one, a professional headshot made from a few selfies gives you one that fits any frame.

Questions about cropping to 4:5

How do I crop an image to 4:5?

Add the photo, move and zoom it until the 4:5 frame holds what you want, pick a size and download it. The tool never stretches the photo.

What size is a 4:5 image for Instagram?

1080 × 1350 px. That is the full size of a portrait post on Instagram.

Does cropping lower the quality of my photo?

The pixels you keep stay as they are. A crop only looks soft when a small part of a photo is blown up to a large size; the tool warns you when that happens.

Can I change the ratio without cutting anything off?

Only by squeezing the picture or adding empty bands around it. Cropping keeps the photo natural: move it in the frame until the part that matters is inside.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The photo is cropped by your browser, on your device. It is not sent to PicSuit or to anyone else.
