LinkedIn profile picture size

LinkedIn asks for a square photo of at least 400 × 400 px and shows it as a circle everywhere: on your profile, next to your posts and comments, in search results and in messages.

Why 800 px is the better upload

400 × 400 px is the minimum, not the best you can do. People who open your photo see it larger than it appears on your profile, and phone screens pack two or three pixels into the space of one. A file of 800 × 800 px stays sharp in both cases and still weighs a fraction of the 8 MB LinkedIn allows.

What the circle cuts off

The circle keeps the middle of the square and hides its four corners, about a fifth of the picture. Anything that matters has to sit inside the circle: your face in the middle, a little room above the hair, shoulders running out at the bottom.

The #OpenToWork frame covers the lower edge

If you switch on #OpenToWork or #Hiring, LinkedIn lays a coloured band over the lower edge of your photo. A chin or a collar that sits low in the circle ends up behind it. Turn the frame on in the tool to see roughly where it falls, and move the photo up until your face is clear of it.

When the photo itself is the problem

A resizer cannot fix a photo that is too small, too dark or cropped at the forehead. If you have no better picture, a professional headshot made from a few selfies gives you one that fits the circle from the start.

Questions about LinkedIn profile pictures

What size is a LinkedIn profile picture?

A square of at least 400 × 400 px. LinkedIn accepts photos up to 7680 × 4320 px and 8 MB, as JPG or PNG, and shows them as a circle.

Why does my LinkedIn photo look blurry?

Usually because the file is smaller than 400 × 400 px, or because a small part of a photo was enlarged. Start from a larger photo and upload 800 × 800 px.

Does LinkedIn crop my photo into a circle?

Yes. You upload a square and LinkedIn hides its corners. The tool shows the circle while you place the photo, so nothing important ends up outside it.

Should I upload a JPG or a PNG?

A JPG. It is the smaller file and photos look the same in it. PNG is under More options for pictures with flat colours or text.

Will the #OpenToWork frame cover my face?

It covers the lower edge of the circle. Turn the frame on in the tool, check where it falls and move the photo up if your chin gets close to it.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The photo is cropped by your browser, on your device. It is not sent to PicSuit or to anyone else.
