How to compress a photo for email

  1. 1

    Add your photo

Drop a file on the tool, choose one from your device or paste it from the clipboard.

  2. 2

    Keep or change the size

The tool starts at 500 KB and 2048 px on the longer side. For many photos in one email, choose 200 KB.

  3. 3

    Check and download

Compare it with the original, then download the file. Its exact size is shown to the byte.

Why photos make emails heavy

Email services limit the size of a message with its attachments; Gmail, for example, allows 25 MB and turns larger files into a Drive link. A few photos straight from a phone reach that quickly, and heavy attachments open slowly on a phone.

Sending many photos

Compress each photo to about 200 KB at 1280 px, and twenty of them fit in one email of a few megabytes. For full-size originals, a link to a shared folder works better than attachments.

Quality first, then pixels

A JPG or WebP file gets smaller in two ways: a lower quality, which drops fine detail the eye hardly sees, or fewer pixels. The tool lowers the quality first, only as far as the photo still looks good, and then makes the photo smaller. Tick “Keep the dimensions” when the size in pixels must stay; then only the quality goes down.

When the photo itself is the problem

Compression makes a photo lighter, not better: it cannot fix a blurry, dark or badly framed picture. If the photo is for a CV, a profile or an application and you have no good one, a professional headshot made from a few selfies gives you one.

Questions about compressing photos for email

How do I make a photo smaller to send by email?

Add the photo and download the compressed JPG, then attach that file to your email instead of the original.

What is a good size for a photo in an email?

For viewing on a screen, about 2048 px on the longer side and up to 500 KB. The photo looks sharp and the email stays light.

Why is the file a little under the size I chose?

Sites count a kilobyte as 1000 or as 1024 bytes. The tool counts 1000, the stricter of the two, so the file fits either way. It keeps the best quality that fits, which lands just under the limit.

Will compressing make my photo look worse?

The smaller the file, the more detail goes. The tool keeps the highest quality that fits and makes the photo smaller before the quality gets low. Click “Show original” to compare before you download.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The photo is compressed by your browser, on your device. It is not sent to PicSuit or to anyone else.
